Syttende Mai Celebration

Five Fun Facts About the Holiday

Syttende Mai, also known as Norwegian Constitution Day, is a vibrant and joyous celebration that holds deep cultural significance for Norwegians around the world. It commemorates the signing of Norway's Constitution on May 17th, 1814, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's history.

Syttende Mai embodies the spirit of unity, independence, and national pride. It's a day filled with laughter, music, parades, and a strong sense of community. Families and friends come together to celebrate Norway's rich heritage and democratic values, making it a day of joyous festivities and heartfelt camaraderie.

One of the highlights of Syttende Mai is the vibrant parades that take place across Norway and in Norwegian communities worldwide. Colorful flags, traditional folk costumes called bunads, marching bands, and cheerful crowds create a lively and festive atmosphere. Children play a central role in the parades, waving flags and singing songs with enthusiasm, adding to the charm of the celebrations.

No Norwegian celebration is complete without delicious food, and Syttende Mai is no exception. Hot dogs wrapped in lefse, krokaner (caramelized almond candy), ice cream, and traditional cakes like kransekake are enjoyed during the festivities. These culinary delights add flavor and fun to the day's celebrations, creating a delightful gastronomic experience for everyone.

While Syttende Mai is rooted in Norwegian history, its spirit transcends borders. Norwegians living abroad, along with people of various nationalities, join in the celebrations, showcasing the global reach of Norwegian culture and heritage. From Oslo to Seattle, Sydney to London, Syttende Mai unites people in a shared love for Norway and its traditions.

Beyond the parades and culinary treats, Syttende Mai is about creating lasting memories. It's a time for families to come together, for friends to share laughter and stories, and for communities to honor their roots. Whether it's dressing up in bunads, waving flags, or enjoying a festive meal, each moment on Syttende Mai is a treasured memory in the making.
